Who’s Driving Your Business?
Many owner operators are driving their own truck. They may have other drivers as well … but, for the most part, they’re in the saddle, picking up and making deliveries.
This is okay because many owner operators love it.
Now, if you’re not in trucking, this message also pertains to pie baking outlets … or any other service.
Listen, there may be a new and better way for you to work your business – maybe you can have your cake and eat it too.
Want to drive your business in a different way?
Consider getting one or several other helpers to run your business which may allow you to do something else.
So what else would you be doing?
You’d be out there making contacts – building relationships.
This is called working ON the business not IN the business.
Too many business owners get so deep into the daily details of operating their business they can’t take a step back to see the big picture … not good.
Every smart business owner who wants to grow and succeed works ON the business instead of trying to do it all on their own.
Alejandro came to me for freight broker training several years ago from Houston and he was NOT interested in telephone marketing to grow his business.
He said, “No, John, I need to get out there and meet clients face-to-face. That’s the only way I work”.
He had a good operations guy taking care of the office and drivers.
The last time I spoke with him he was doing about 5 million a year (up from a million a year when we trained).
Now, there’s a new intermodal hub development going on in northeast Georgia that will connect with the Port of Savannah.
It’s an inland port called the Blue Ridge Connector, a transformative rail hub currently under construction with a 2026 opening date.
This development will spur growth and numerous opportunities with the production of heavy equipment, food, forest products and retail distribution.
Now, you can sit there and read about it … OR you can get out there and make some connections. Whether you’re in trucking or brokering, it doesn’t matter.
There are new opportunities all around the country. Yes, making personal visits can be time-consuming but they are usually more effective.
If you’re not operating near northeast Georgia, do some research in your own area.
Business usually doesn’t come to you – you have to go out there and grab it – make it happen.
Learn what new developments are going on in your area, find out what they are looking for and learn about their requirements.
Build your resume as you build your business. Be able to inform others of what you HAVE offered and what you can offer now …
