When Workers Strike

When Workers Strike

If you’ve been following the national economy, especially logistics, you know that the East Coast and Gulf Ports went on strike for just a couple of days several weeks ago.

The strike was short-lived because workers and management/owners came to a temporary agreement on wages.

However, the issue of automation was side-tabled and in January 2025, they’ll take up this issue.

Workers want assurance of job protection as new technology threatens to replace workers.

Here’s the problem … technological progress is here and it’s here to stay. There will be some jobs, if not most at the ports, on the hook with nothing to save them.

That’s the way it works.

Personally, I was in favor of port workers getting a big boost in wages … they were steady workers throughout covid as many people stayed at home collecting their Santa Clause checks.

If workers press hard against automation, the ports, again, could strike and it could be a long one. It’s because the complexities of technology are so great (and yet so simple).

Some are pushing for increased automation, saying we should do this to remain competitive. The fact is, whether automation should or should not be implemented, automation is a non-debatable issue.

It IS going to happen.

Let’s hope both workers and management focus on education, retraining, and getting personal finances in order.

If you have any interest in this issue, I think you’ll find this short video very interesting.
