Steps in Getting Your MC and DOT#s – DIY

The Unified Registered System (URS)

Have these items completed BEFORE you prepare the URS application:

1. A registered business for your freight brokerage (note: do not put your freight brokerage inside of a trucking company or any other company that you have set up and registered for something else).
2. Yes, you will need a separate MC and DOT# for your brokerage even if you have a trucking company.
3. Have a Federal ID (EIN) number (unless you choose to use your social security number).
4. Have a business address – P.O. Box or physical.
5. Have a phone number – you need not have a fax number to complete this application.
6. If you are a sole owner of your brokerage and choose to set up an LLC (single member), consult your accountant as to whether you should file your income taxes as a Sole Proprietor or Corporation.
7. If you have had ownership in a trucking company in the past three years or if you currently have ownership, have that company’s name and DOT# nearby.
8. Have a credit card nearby – $300, non-refundable fee to the FMCSA.

Pay Attention to These Items:

• When you begin your application on the URS for you MC and DOT#s, you will be automatically assigned a User ID number. WRITE IT DOWN! YOU WILL NEED IT LATER!
• You will be asked to choose your own Password – WRITE IT DOWN!
• You will be asked to supply answers to three security questions. WRITE THEM DOWN!

After you get your MC and DOT#s and if you are taking our training, Part 1 in our comprehensive training – Getting Organized and Getting Your Broker Authority – will provide some instruction and contacts for:
• Your BOC-3,
• Your Unified Carrier Registration (UCR),
• Your trust fund or surety bond, plus more.
