Say Goodbye to MC#s

Say Goodbye to MC#s

This issue has been on the backburner for some time. It used to be that MC#s were given to brokers and freight forwarders while DOT#s were given to trucking companies.

Then they started assigning DOT#s to brokers as well, knowing that MC#s were on their way out.

I’ve been telling clients for several years to stop using the MC# on business cards, etc., for example, and just rely upon the DOT#.

Here’s why there will be a renewed push for doing away with MC#s – it’s being done in an effort to reduce fraud and provide more security.

The word “fraud” in the logistics industry has been thrown around for some time and I just wish a credible resource would spell out most of the circumstances that involve fraud.

Both carriers and brokers are guilty of fraud.

Here’s what the FMCSA says about fraud – but is it enough? It’s a good start, I guess. Click the link below:

The FMCSA wants to tighten control over new entries into the industry and focus on current ones as well.

There is at least one aspect of this upgrade that has drawn the ire of some drivers. FMCSA wants to disallow registrants to proceed with their application until they’ve proven their identity and that their business exists and is registered with the IRS or the state.

You’ll have to read this article below published by OverDrive to learn more about some of the comments.

We’ll see how long it takes for FMCSA to bring new regulations into play. It’s not a quick process and maybe for good reason.
