Building Your Business – Part 2

Let’s imagine for a moment that you are beginning your freight broker business and you are working off of your kitchen table or from your office in your bedroom or from an expensive office – it does not matter.

You are searching for shippers with cargo but you are coming up with zip. And you may be thinking, “Where can I go to get some help?”

What if you could pick up a pair of binoculars and start peering out of your window where you could zero in on about 10 other freight broker businesses.

They are out there – how can you pick their brain? – or is this even possible?

Before I got into brokering myself, I approached about 20 freight brokers and I asked for the owner. I told him I had a cash flow projection and wanted to know if it was realistic or not.

Let me tell you, they ALL invited me in. No rejections.

I showed them my projection (I’m an accountant and put a lot of time into it) and they ate this stuff up!

If I had gone in asking for help or information, I would have been shown the door.

Well, some may just simply smile and tell you something like, “Well, we work hard at it – it’s not easy” [true].

It is almost guaranteed that NO ONE is going to give you a lot of help. And you may become desperate in wondering where can you go to get help?.

So, what do you do if you can’t find the help you want and it appears there is no easy way? Well, you could start thinking and planning and putting together various action plans.

Some new approaches to getting started might be searching new geographic areas, focusing on certain trailer types such as just flat beds or just reefers, checking out some rural areas or using different Internet search engines or being more alert as to what is going on in your local area or using more creative and targeted keywords in your searches.

The fastest way to get started is to stop looking for an easy way and actually plan to pay your dues up front – put in a lot of time and work – or, maybe pay someone to help..

In the final analysis, it is up to YOU to decide how to get started. Even if you go to a school that also has a brokerage, or if you are lucky enough to have someone take you under their wing – they will not divulge their best stuff. Why?

You are competition – potential or real.
