Let’s imagine yourself for a moment that you are beginning your freight broker business and you are working off of your kitchen table or from your office in your bedroom or from an expensive office – it does not matter.
You are searching for shippers with cargo but you are coming up with zip. And you may be thinking, “Where can I go to get some help?”
What if you could pick up a pair of binoculars and start peering out of your window where you could zero in on about 10 other freight broker businesses.
Let’s say these 10 businesses are doing extremely well and they are getting tons of loads every week and every month. So, imagine yourself driving over to each office and asking them, “What is your secret to success? How are you getting all these loads every week?”
Well, most, if not all, will just simply smile and tell you something like, “Well, we work hard at it”. And then you ask, “Can you teach me?” They will smile again and maybe not even answer or, they will say something like, “Just start calling businesses”. If they are generous, they will say, “Go to the Thomas Register – there are tons of shippers there”.
Well, yes, the Thomas Register IS extremely popular for freight brokers. BUT, if you are going where everyone else is going, you don’t have the competitive edge that you need to overcome your competition.
It is almost guaranteed that NO ONE is going to give you a lot of help. And you become even more desperate to find an EASY way to find loads. But things just keep getting worse.
So, what do you do if you can’t find the help you want and it appears there is no easy way? Well, you could start thinking and planning and putting together various action plans.
Some new approaches to getting started might be searching new geographic areas, focusing on certain trailer types such as just flat beds or just reefers, or using different Internet search engines or being more alert as to what is going on in your local area or using more creative and targeted keywords in your searches.
The fastest way to get started is to do some things the right way and avoid doing some things the wrong way.
In the final analysis, it is up to YOU to carve out your own niche – over time. Even if you go to a school that also does freight brokering or if you are lucky enough to have someone take you under their wing – they will not divulge their best stuff.
Keep trying new approaches and, at some point, you may be able to create your own secret to success. And you may be able to build your business on a solid foundation.
